Yes. You can download the trial version here. The trial version does have the full feature set. However, Viewlets created using trial versions will contain watermarks.

Your Viewlets have watermarks because they were created with a trial version of ViewletQuiz. To remove them, you must purchase ViewletQuiz and “activate your license” (a license activation code is provided to you upon purchase). Using the licensed software, you will then be able to “convert” the Viewlets to remove the watermarks. One important thing to remember is that you can only convert watermarked Viewlets if they were created on the same computer the licensed version is installed.

No, once you install ViewletQuiz, you have everything you need to run the software. However, there may be some programs (which are not considered plug-ins) that you need installed on your system in order to run ViewletQuiz. Visit our technical specifications page for more information on system requirements for your particular operating system.

Copy the license number you received in your order confirmation email. Inside ViewletQuiz, select Help > License Activation. Make sure you are connected to the Internet and then paste your license in the field provided and click Next and follow the prompts to complete the registration process.

In ViewletQuiz, select Help > License Activation and follow the instructions for deactivating the license. Once the license is deactivated, install the trial version of ViewletQuiz on the other computer and register it with the newly deactivated license.

When you open ViewletQuiz, you will see a live HTML page. This is also known as the dyamic Start Page. If you are online, this page will gather information from the server and display it in this area of the program window. And, the information displayed is dynamic and can be customized to meet your company's needs.

Yes. Select the “Scoring” icon in the Context Sensitive Toolbar and a scoring screen will open. Place a check mark next to “Enable a time limit for the question” and specify the maximum time duration.

Yes. Images (SVG, PNG, non-animated GIF, JPEG and BMP files) and movies (SWF files), including Viewlets can be directly inserted onto a slide. To do this, selecting the “Insert Movie” and “Insert Image” icons on the Tools toolbar or use the Insert drop-down menu.

Sounds can be attached to various objects including messages such as balloons, notes and texts as well as slides. To do this, select the object, then choose the “Sound” icon in the Context Sensitive Toolbar. A window will open allowing you to choose the sound file you wish to attach.

In the Create New Project window, select Standards from the drop-down list. Enter a new slide height and width and give the new standard size a name. This new custom size will be available for all new projects and can be modified as needed.

Yes. To add a background soundtrack to your project, in the Project Properties window, select Viewlet Options. In that screen you will see an option to browse for and select a background soundtrack.

The "Play Sound" Action allows asynchronously sound actions in a project.

They are as follows:
.vie(file):
This is the project's source file, containing all the question slides, imported images, audio, etc., embedded into this single source file. This vie file is what is opened and edited inside ViewletQuiz.

.vi~(file):
This is the project's backup source file. If needed, a project may be restored from the backup file by changing the last character from a "~" to a "e".

.swf(file):
This is the compiled Viewlet file (found in the folder named after the source file) that can be played back through a browser that contains a Flash (6.0 or better) plugin or through a Flash (6.0 or better) stand-alone player.

_viewlet_swf.html(file):
This is a sample HTML file created when a project is compiled. This file has the Viewlet embedded into it and is used to launch it in a browser.

.qvss(file):
This is the Stylesheet file. By default, it is stored in the ViewletQuiz Library folder under C:\Program Files\Qarbon\ViewletQuiz\Library\Stylesheets.

Not at this time. However, you will have this capability with ViewletBuilder6 Enterprise, our next generation of ViewletBuilder. In fact, Qarbon’s suite of products share a common architecture that will enable cross-functional usage of projects and files. Furthermore, ViewletBuilder6 will allow you to open any Viewlet you that you have created using ViewletBuilder or ViewletQuiz.

Yes, you can set preferences for ViewletQuiz to create backup files or perform auto saves while you are working. To do this, select Edit > Preferences from the menu bar. Select the Backup tab and set your preferences for creating backups and auto saves as desired.

The built-in browser on ViewletQuiz provides you with all the resources that are available to you while you are authoring your Viewlets. Through the browser, you can do the following:

• Add publishing targets
• Manage and organize your Viewlets

A Stylesheet is basically a template that you use to customize the look of your quiz or survey. There is a Stylesheet panel in ViewletQuiz that allows you to create a Stylesheet that defines properties of certain objects. For example, you can set the background color of your slide, the font type used for your question, your answer choices, etc. You can apply then apply the Stylesheet to all of your slides in a project or to a selected number of slides. To begin, select the “Stylesheet” icon in the Main Toolbar.

When you create a new Stylesheet, they are automatically stored in the ViewletQuiz library folder under C:\ProgramFiles\Qarbon\ViewletQuiz. The list of Stylesheets that you create will be displayed when you select the Stylesheets drop down menu in the Stylesheet panel. ViewletQuiz also provides you with a default Stylesheet.

You can set properties of various objects in a Stylesheet. Objects include slides, messages (Balloons, Notes, Text Boxes), Question Text, Question Choice Text, Question Row Text, Question Column Text and Question Choice (i.e. Radio Buttons Style, Combo Box Style, Ratings Style, etc). We expect to include more objects in the future.

After you create the Corporate Stylesheet, you can send it to all the authors via email, disk, etc. Have the authors copy the file into the ViewletQuiz library folder on their computer where ViewletQuiz is installed. When they run ViewletQuiz, they will be able to view this Stylesheet from the drop-down menu in the Stylesheet panel and will be able to apply it to their projects.

We recommend using no more than 100 to 150 slides for effective playback on lower speed Internet connections. If you insert graphics or audio, you might want to consider using fewer slides.

No. You can only place one question per slide.

There are different ways to do this depending on where you are in your project.

When you first create your questions using the New Project wizard, you will have the first opportunity to determine the order of your questions and arrange them accordingly. To do this, first select the question type and type in the question in the text field provided. Repeat until you are done with all questions and click ‘OK’. You will see the list of all of your questions displayed. You can then use the up and down arrows on the right to re-arrange your questions.

If you are in thumbnail/slide view and decide you want to re-order your question slides, click on the slide you want to move and while holding down your left mouse button, simply drag it to its new position (between two slides), and let go of the left mouse button to drop it into place. To move multiple, sequential slides, click on the first slide in the sequence. Then, hold down the "Shift" key and click on the last slide in the sequence. Let go of the "Shift" key and drag and drop the slides into place. You can also move nonadjacent slides (just like you would sequential slides), but you hold down the "Ctrl" key as you select each of your slides. You can also cut and paste slides to change their order.

Yes, you can import slides from other ViewletQuiz projects. Select File > Import > Import Slides from the menu bar. Browse to locate and select your project (source file must end in .vie), select your slides in the import preview window and import them.

You can set the general timing of your slides by first selecting “Project Properties” in the Main Toolbar, then choosing timing. The minimum duration your slides will be displayed is set to 1 second by default. To control the timing of each slide individually, click on the slide twice in thumbnail/slide view to open the “Slide Properties” dialog window and adjust the timing using the up and down arrows.

Yes. Select File > Export > Question Mark... from the menu bar and following the prompts to export slides to the Question Mark format. For more information on Question Mark, visit their web site www.questionmark.com.

The Zoom Slider (used while viewing slide thumbnails) is a slider bar that allows you to increase or decrease the viewing size of thumbnails (slides).

A Timeline is a feature within ViewletQuiz that allows you to see slides as they play across a specified time period. The Timeline works just as it would in a regular Flash development environment, allowing you the ability to quickly change slide timings, move items along the Timeline, etc. Please refer to the ViewletQuiz User Guide for more information on working with the Timeline feature.

To add presenter or author notes to a slide, select View > Slide Notes from the menu bar. In the Slide Notes tab, click in the field provided and type in any notes as desired. You can also print Slide Notes by selecting Slide Notes (under Options) in the Page Layout window.

Yes. Select the slides (or the thumbnails of the slides) you want to modify. Right-click and select Background Image from the shortcut menu. In the Background Image window, make your modifications and apply them to the selected slide.

Messages are Balloons, Notes and Textboxes that have text information written on it. You can use messages to enhance your communication with the viewer. You can use Balloons and explain a specific area of your slide. Or, you can use Notes to provide or remind the viewer of important information without calling attention to a particular area of the slide. In any case, messages can add lots of impact to your Viewlet.

You can insert as many messages of any type in a slide.

Yes. After you insert the message, select it and then choose the “Properties” icon in the Context Sensitive Toolbar. You can adjust the display start time, end time, or display duration time.

ViewletQuiz provides you with a wide variety of message styles to choose from. Styles include classic, curvy, bubbles, simple and standard each with a very unique look. After inserting your message (which comes with a default style), select the message and choose the “Message Type” icon in the Context Sensitive Toolbar to view the list of options. You can further customize it of-course by choosing a specific color or border for the message object or a certain font type for the text.

ViewletQuiz provides you with many options to choose from. For correct, incorrect or incomplete answers to questions, you can choose from any one of the following actions:

• Play sound
• Move forward 1 slide
• Goto a specific slide
• Move forward x number of slides
• Display URL
• Send email to
• Execute Javascript
• Display an object
• Play a movie (including a Viewlet)
• Show score

To set actions for a particular question slide, select the slide (while in thumbnail/slide view) and choose the “Events” icon in the Context Sensitive Toolbar.

Yes, you can also have multiple actions perform sequentially on a specific event. For example, if a respondent answers incorrectly, you can play a sound, then display an object and move on to the next slide. You cannot, however, have multiple actions perform simultaneously such as playing a sound while displaying an object.

Absolutely. To attach a sound to a slide, select the slide while in thumbnail/slide view then click on the “Attach sound” icon in the Context Sensitive Toolbar. You have the choice to attach a pre-recorded sound or record a new sound.

ViewletQuiz supports mp3, .aiff, au and wav files.

Yes. To include voice-over in ViewletQuiz, start by clicking on the slide either in thumbnail or slide view to load the context sensitive toolbar. Click on the “attach sound” icon to display the sound dialog. This will allow you to add sound to a slide and can accept either a recorded sound or voice-over. You can navigate from slide to slide with voiceovers using the Prev and Next buttons.

Buttons can be added to any slide regardless of the slides contents. To add a custom button, select Insert > Button from the menu bar. A button will be inserted on the slide, which you can then customize to meet your needs.

Yes. Select Insert > Pause Zone from the menu bar. A red triangle will appear in the bottom right of the corner indicating that the slide will paused when the Viewlet is played. This red triangle will not appear in the published Flash Viewlet.

ViewletQuiz offers many Events and Actions to make your Viewlet more engaging to the end user. Please refer to the ViewletQuiz User Guide for more information on Events and Actions.

Click the Insert Movie icon on the Objects toolbar. In the Insert Movie window, select Embed Movie File. Browse to find and select the movie file. Click OK to embed it on the slide.

Currently the SWF movie format is supported, with the following restrictions:

• Movie must be in version 7 or less. Version 8 is only partially supported.
• ActionScript version 3 isn't currently supported.
• Recommended frame rate is 18 frames per second. Viewlets play at 18 fps and will play any embedded movies at this rate. So if your embedded movie has a higher frame rate, it will appear to be playing slow and vice versa.

Embedded movies, in most cases, inherit the Viewlet's frame rate. For example, an embedded SWF movie whose frame rate is 12 fps, when loaded into a Viewlet whose frame rate is 24 fps, will play back at 24 fps. This also means that an embedded movie will play back two times faster than normal. And vice versa, an embedded SWF movie file whose frame rate is 24 fps, when loaded into a Viewlet whose frame rate is 12 fps, will play back at 12 fps, or two times slower.

The only exception is if the embedded movie contains a sound on the timeline whose sync is set to "stream". Then the Viewlet will automatically run at the frame rate of the embedded movie to insure the correct playback of the sound. This is the case for ViewletCam Viewlets with sound.

Project Properties are defaults you set up for your Viewlet project such as Viewlet Profile information, image and sound quality, Flash settings and more.

Select Project > Project Properties from the menu. In the Viewlet Profile section, enter all of the Viewlet authoring and company information as needed.

Viewlets may be published using CD, high or standard quality. Or, you can choose to strip all sound when publishing a project without affecting audio in the source file.

Yes, this is set up in the Project Properties window in the Image Quality section.

Global timing options are available for cursor and reading speed in the Timing section of the Project Properties window.

Packaging options include creating a stand alone player and a zip file. These options are found in the Project Properties window in the Packaging section.

Flash publishing defaults may be viewed and selected in the Flash section of the Project Properties window.

You specify the Animated Extras in Project Properties / Flash / Animated Extras panel.

Animated Extras are Flash (SWF) movies that are attached to the beginning and/or to the end of the viewlet. This allows you to add a custom introduction or conclusion to your Viewlet.

Currently only the Flash (SWF) movie file format is supported, with additional restictions:

• Movie must be in version 7 or less. Version 8 is only partially supported.
• ActionScript version 3 isn't currently supported.
• SWF movie cannot have embedded video.
• SWF cannot have any exported symbols (symbols that are used via the attachMovie function).
• SWF dimensions must be the same or smaller than the Viewlet.
• SWF should be a simple frame to frame animation, rather than a complex SWF controlled via AcitonScript
• Recommended frame rate is 18 frames per second. Viewlets play at 18 fps and will play animated extras at this rate. So if your animated extra has a higher frame rate, it will appear to be playing slow and vice versa.
• The duration of the animated extras are calculated by multiplying its frame count by 18 fps. It will be displayed for this calculated duration time.
• The begining movie cannot have stop() function call on the timeline.

A ViewletSkin is the wrapper around the Viewlet. To view skinning options, select ViewletSkin in the Project Properties window.

This is the frame that the Viewlet plays in on a web page. Refer to the ViewletBuilder6 User Manual for more information or contact support@qarbon.com.

You can edit HTML Frame defaults in the HTML Frame section of the Project Properties window.

After you finish designing your quiz or survey and save it, you will generate a .vie file which is the source file. You will then need to compile it and “publish” the compiled file to a location. The compiled (published) files are independent of the source (.vie) file, so each time you make any edits to your Viewlet source file, you must recompile to update your published Viewlet files. This allows the viewer to see the updated version. For more information on this topic, please visit the ViewletQuiz tutorials page.

Just click on the ‘’Publish Viewlet” icon in the Main Toolbar. Before you do this however, you should take a look at the various options you have in compiling your Viewlet. The options include sound quality, image quality, packaging, general timing of slides, the language used, whether or not you want to have your viewers “log-in” to the quiz or survey and more. Depending on which options you choose, the compilation will produce different outputs. Start by selecting the “Project Properties” icon in the Main Toolbar.

Under “Project Properties – ViewletSkin”, the drop-down menu will reveal the list of ViewletSkins available for your compiled Viewlet. The skin defines the "look" (colors, style, etc.) of your Viewlet. It applies to the player bars and the area around the compiled Viewlet. If you are a Pro user, you can select the "Refresh list" button to download additional ViewletSkins (if available) to use with your compiled Viewlet.

When the Viewlet is played, the viewer will see a side panel with the Table of Contents. It is displayed continuously until the end of the Viewlet. The Table of Contents shows the list of questions and the corresponding number of “points” for each question. As the respondent moves through the quiz, the Table of Contents will “highlight” the question he is currently on. To enable the Table of Contents in your Viewlet, go to “Project Properties” then select “Viewletskin”. Place a check mark next to “Display Table of Contents”.

In the Project Properties screen, select the "Viewlet Profile " view. You will see an "Author" area where you can input additional authoring information. Name, email, comments and Web site addresses will be visible in the "Author Profile Panel" of your compiled Viewlet.

Yes, you can choose the language option to compile in one of the available languages for localization purposes. However, compiling in a different language will NOT change (translate) the text contained in the project (for balloons, notes, slide text) into the language chosen for compilation. You must manually edit the text for translation purposes. You can start by exporting the text you need to translate and saving it into a file. To do this, select “File – Export Text for Translation” from the drop-down menu.

Your compiled Viewlets are saved in the folder named after your source (.vie) file under the target location you have specified when you published them.

If you choose to create an executable Viewlet file when compiling, ViewletQuiz will combine the Flash stand alone player with your Viewlet .swf file into one single executable (.exe) file. When double clicked, the .exe file will play the Viewlet on computers without the need for a browser or Flash stand alone player.

To create an executable Viewlet file, go to the Project Properties screen and select the "Packaging" option. You will see an option to "Create an executable file". After selecting this option, compile your Viewlet. ViewletQuiz will create an .exe file and place it in the folder named after the Viewlet’s source file. This folder is found in the publishing location you specified when you compiled (published) your Viewlet.

In the Project Properties window, select Viewlet Options. In the Scoring Options area of the screen, make sure the checkbox for Allow Repeat is deselected.

Previously, Viewlet Options were included as part of the Publishing Wizard. These options have been integrated into Project Properties. To access these options, select Project > Project Properties from the menu bar. In the Project Properties window that displays, select Viewlet Options.

ViewletQuiz displays the Viewlet's publishing history in a unique dialog window. To see the details of the Viewlet's publishing history, select Project > Display Publishing Profile from the menu bar.

While you are not required to publish on ViewletCentral, there are certainly advantages to using ViewletCentral. The main advantage is that all activity pertaining to your Viewlets, including scores and survey results, are collected in real time. These results can then be viewed and exported in csv format to analysis programs such as Excel and Access, or into your own system. Another advantage to ViewletCentral is one-click publishing. However, as mentioned, ViewletCentral is not a requirement and you can indeed publish to any server. The content generated by ViewletQuiz is SCORM 1.2/2004 and AICC compliant, allowing you to easily integrate the tool with an LMS. You also have the option to view reports via e-mail. These latter methods, of-course, will rely on your having IT and LMS resources.

This depends on where you publish your Viewlets.

The easiest way is for you to publish on ViewletCentral. ViewletCentral's main purpose is to support Viewlet publication and reporting. General statistics can be viewed by selecting the “Views” icon, then “Details View” in the Browser toolbar. Next, expand the Browser tab and click on the Viewlet you wish to see statistics on. You will see general scoring statistics by right clicking on the Viewlet and then choosing “properties” from the drop-down list. For more detailed scoring statistics, you must log in to your ViewletCentral account.

If you publish your Viewlets on your own web server, you can obtain scoring reports via email. You can choose this in the Publishing Wizard Reporting screen.

If you have a proxy server, this may be the problem. To configure the proxy server, go to ViewletQuiz Preferences by selecting “Edit – Preferences” from the drop-down menu. Next, click on the Proxy tab and enter your information.

Another possible cause of the problem may be related to your firewall. You may want to temporarily disable your firewall and see if that resolves the problem. If you are then able to connect, you will need to configure your firewall to let ViewletQuiz communicate with ViewletCentral. Generally firewalls will configure dynamically when ViewletQuiz is first run, prompting you to give it access to the internet. If this is not the case, you may need to configure it manually. The configuration will vary based on the firewall you are running. You will need to make sure that the following program can access the internet:

C:\Program Files\Qarbon\ViewletQuiz\jre\bin\javaw.exe. Your firewall should use HTTP on port 80.

Finally, if neither of these resolves the problem, take a look at the Output window in ViewletQuiz by selecting “View – Output” from the drop-down menu and see if any error messages are displayed during connection.

Upon successful activation you may see a message such as:

Type: 1 User License
Status: 2 Activations Used "Over Allowed Limit"

The over allowed limit message means that you have activated the product on more machines than your license allows.. We allow some extra "grace" activations, however if this is activated on more machines than you intend, you should go to the other machine and deactivate.

You can deactivate by using the "Deactivate" command from the "Help" menu.

If you exceed the number of allowed activations and grace activations you will see a message that says "The license code you entered has exceeded its total number of activations".

Your Viewlet may display the following error message "Due to the security settings of your Flash Player plugin, some advanced features of this Viewlet are disabled."

This is displayed because the Flash 8 security model has restrictions against accessing the local machine. This only applies if the Viewlet is run from the local machine. For example if the HTML and SWF file are in a folder on your machine and you run by opening the main html page in your browser. If the Viewlet will be run from a webserver, this error message won't be displayed.

This error message will happen if you have actions in your viewelt that call Javascript in the HTML, such as the "Display URL" action or "Javascript" action, and its run from a non trusted folder. The way to resolve this issue is to notify Flash that the folder the Viewlet is running from is "trusted".

There are several ways to mark a folder as trusted.

1. Any "Local or Network Folders" that are added to the Publishing Wizard in ViewletQuiz are automatically trusted. VielwetBuilder will automatically setup this folder as trusted. This is why Viewlets run from "My Viewlets" won't display the error message.

2. Open the Adobe Global Security Settings Panel in your browser and click on "Edit Locations..." and add the folder your Viewlet is in on the local machine to the list of trusted folders.

3. Add a text file to the following directory (where <username> is the currently logged in user) that lists the names of the trusted directories, one per line:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#Security\FlashPlayerTrust

You can take a look at the file ViewletQuiz sets up in this folder named QarbonTrustLocations.txt for an example.

If you are setting up Computer Based Training where a users installs Viewlets from a CD. You will need to modify your installation script to add an a trust entry for the location where the Viewlets were installed.

You can not publish to a Licensed ViewletCentral account from an Unlicensed version of ViewletQuiz.

With an unlicensed version of ViewletQuiz you can create as many projects as you want, on the same machine, without activating. Once you activate the watermark will be removed from the projets when they are recompiled.

However you can only open those projects created on that machine. You can not open projects created by an unlicensed version of ViewletQuiz on another machine. In other words projects created by an unlicensed version of ViewletQuiz are tied to that machine.

These restrictions only apply to projects created with unlicensed versions of ViewletQuiz. Projects created with licensed versions can be opened by any other licensed version of ViewletQuiz.

The reason Qarbon enforces this rule is because in the past some customers have purcahsed one version of ViewletQuiz for an entire department. The licensed version was used to compile and publish Viewlets, while all of the authors used free versions to create projects. We feel that it wasn't fair use and didn't comply with the terms of our license.

If you get this error message it means that you are attempting to open a project created on another machine with an unlicensed version of ViewletQuiz. To resolve this issue, the project must be opened on the machine it was created on. If ViewletQuiz on that machine is activated and then, the the unlicensed project opened and recompiled, then all restrictions will be removed.

Unlicensed versions of ViewletQuiz can only open projects created with an unlicensed version of ViewletQuiz. This allows our customers to try ViewletQuiz and determine if meets thier needs.

The unlicensed version of ViewletQuiz is feature complete the only restriction is that published Viewlets will have a watermark. Viewlets previewed using Project > Preview in Browser will not have a watermark.
