What sound features are available in ViewletCam?

Sound features include recording audio for narration purposes while capturing onscreen actions for synchronous sound across your project. You can also capture sound effects produced by the computer while capturing onscreen actions. Sound options, such as inserting external sound files, are also available. Please visit our ViewletCam tutorials page to watch tutorials on ViewletCam sound options.

Can I record sound while capturing onscreen actions?

Yes. Select “File” then “New” from the menu options. In the “Create New Project” screen type a file name in the field provided, and click the “Browse” button to choose a location to save your project. Click the “Next” button and in the “Choose Capture Mode” screen, select an option for the screen capture. Click “Next” and in the “Capture…” screen, place a checkmark next to “Record sound”. To set sound preferences, press the “Setup” button next to the “Record sound” option. For more information on this topic, please visit our ViewletCam tutorials page to view the “Sound Recording Preferences” demo.

How do I set my sound recording preferences?

There are two ways to do this. If you are going to record narration during a live onscreen capture session, in the “Capture…” screen that you see right before you start your onscreen capture session, place a checkmark next to the “Record sound” option. Then, press the “Setup” button and select your sound preferences for recording in the “Sound” screen. Or, if you are inserting sound into an existing .vcp file, click on the frame along the Timeline where you want to insert the sound. Then, select “Insert-Sound” from the menu option. In the “Sound” screen, select the option “Record sound from microphone” and then click the “Setup” button. In the “Sound” screen that appears, set your sound recording preferences. For more information on this topic, please visit our ViewletCam tutorials page to watch some demos.

Can I record computer sounds and microphone input at the same time?

No. You can only capture either computer sounds or microphone input, not both, during an onscreen capture session.

When recording sound for a ViewletCam project, what type of sound file is created?

When you record sound while using ViewletCam, it will create a .wav file that is included as a sound layer in your .vcp source file.

What audio files does ViewletCam currently support for imported sound?

Currently only WAV files are supported.

How do I know if sound has been added to my Viewlet?

You will see a Sound layer along Timeline. Make sure to place a check mark inside the left box (above the “eye” icon) in this layer to enable this sound layer; otherwise, the sound clip will not play.

Can I insert sound inside ViewletCam in an existing project?

Yes, select the frame along the Timeline where you want to insert the sound. Select “Insert” then “Sound” from the menu options. You can insert a WAV file by choosing the “Sound from WAV file” option and then browse to select your sound file. To record audio, select the option “Record sound from microphone”. Then, click the “Setup” button to set your sound preferences. Once that is done, record your audio. You can play back both imported and recorded audio by clicking the appropriate “Play” button. Also, we suggest checking the option for “Synchronized Streaming Sound” for best results. Finally, click “OK” and a sound layer will be added to your project.

Can I hear the sound before inserting it into my project?

Yes. You can listen to the sound recording by clicking the appropriate “Play” button in the “Sound” screen after importing or recording a sound file.

Why can’t I hear my sound file when playing back my project?

Make sure you place a checkmark in the Sound layer that is added to the Timeline, otherwise, your sound layer will be disabled and you will not hear the sound on playback.

How do I disable a sound layer without deleting it?

Select the Sound layer along the Timeline. Then, remove the checkmarks from the Sound layer. This will disable the layer without deleting it from the project.

How do I lock a sound layer?

Select the Sound layer to highlight it. Then, in the second box (the one above the lock icon in the Timeline), place a checkmark. This will lock the layer, preventing it from being edited. To unlock the layer, remove the checkmark.

How do I delete a sound layer?

There are several ways to do this. Perhaps the fastest way is to select the Sound layer to highlight it. Then, right click and select “Delete” from the right click shortcut menu.

How do I add Mouse and Keyboard Sounds into an existing project?

To insert a Mouse and / or Keyboard sound to frames, select the desired frame along the Timeline. Select “Insert Mouse Sound” from the menu options. In the screen that opens you can select “No sound”, “Default sound” or “Custom sound” for both the Mouse and / or the Keyboard. If choosing a custom sound, browse to find the file and select it. Once your choices are made, click the “OK” button to add the sound clips to the project. A “Sound” layer will be added to the Timeline. Make sure to place a checkmark inside the left box in this layer to enable this sound layer, otherwise, the sound clip will not play.

I’ve deleted some frames in my project and now my sound is out of sync, why?

If you delete ANY frames along the Timeline in your source file, it will not affect the Sound layer. So, we suggest that you do NOT delete any frames with projects that have a sound layer that must play across the entire project. By deleting the frames, your sound layer will nut be truncated, therefore, the audio will play out of sync with the frames. You will need to delete the sound layer and reinsert a new sound layer that can be synchronized to play correctly along the Timeline with the existing frames that make up the project.

If I change the “speed” of my source file prior to exporting to Flash, will this affect my sound?

Yes, if you increase or decrease the playback speed of your project and have a sound layer in it, the audio may be out of sync on playback. Increasing or decreasing playback speed does not affect the sound layer, so be careful when using this option if your project contains synchronous sound across the entire file.

Can I edit my sound layer inside ViewletCam?

You can only enable, disable, lock, unlock, or delete your sound layer. If you need to edit the sound, you must do so in an external sound-editing program and then reinsert it back into the project.

What file format does ViewletCam use when converting sound?

When you export your source file to Flash, ViewletCam will produce three files: an HTML, an MP3, and a SWF file. In order for the Viewlet to play back the audio when the Flash file is playing back, the MP3 file MUST be in the SAME folder with SWF, whether stored on your hard drive, on disc, CD or on your web site. Otherwise, the Viewlet itself will play, but if the MP3 is not in the same folder, no audio will be heard during playback.
